Free Books

Neil Gaiman's book American Gods is available to read online, for free over the next month. This is the link. I was originally disappointed when I found it, as I had gotten used to Tor's free books, which are available as downloadable PDF's. This one is just available online, but he comments on the blog that if it's popular it may be made completely free, so I'm hoping that happens. (I should note, I own the book in hardcover, and so far I already own two of the three books Tor is releasing for free, but I still really like having the pdf's.)

Oh, the current book for the Tor thing, which I think I mentioned earlier, is Spin, by Robert Charles Wilson. I very much recommend it, I've been thinking of picking up the sequel but have been avoiding it due to thesis stuff. ;)

Free Books

Hi all! Sorry for being away from the blog for a few days. Still recovering from this sore throat/cold type thing that started up last sunday. Lots of work to do now and I'm still in the eating + sleeping stage, trying to recover.

Anyways, this post isn't about me! Well, wasn't supposed to be, at least. I actually wanted to pass along something cool that I think those of you reading this would be interested in. Tor Books is doing a thing to promote their new website and stuff. Normally this wouldn't be that interesting to me, except when I saw that the thing involved giving away free books in .pdf form, and that one of those books was Old Man's War, by John Scalzi, which I have and really like. I just got the email today that the promotion started, and along with it, a link to the first book they released: Mistborn, by Brandon Sanderson. Never read it, but it turned out to be pretty interesting. The pdf format was better than I expected as well, being pretty easy to read and not that bad on the eyes, unlike what I was expecting.

So, if anyone reading this likes reading, you can sign up to get a free book each week. I think it's a really great idea on their part, I know I will keep an eye out for this author next time I'm in the bookshop, and since without it I'd probably have never read any of his books, that's a net gain for them. The next two books they've announced are the Scalzi one mentioned above (and it's VERY good, I picked it up a while ago when I was looking through books that had won awards recently and it sounded good), and Through Wolf's Eyes, by Jane Lindskold, which I've not heard of but am looking forward to seeing. I think they've said it will be twelve books in total (but can't spot that on the site, so not totally sure, maybe it was in their email?), and as far as I can tell they are completely DRM free. I will have to double check, but I think that (plus other stuff) means if you want to read the one I downloaded already (which I'm not sure you'll be sent if you sign up now), I'm free to send you a copy of the pdf. If you do sign up and they send you it, let me know, I'm curious how it'll work. :)

Edit: I'm a dolt, I forgot to actually link the site where you can sign up. Here it is.
